some enchanted evening
Valentine's Day, 2004
The evening began with a phone call, and finding out that Kevin's grandmother passed away. She was his father's mother, lived in Utah, and had been very sick for a long time. She was suffering with pain, and couldn't even eat solid foods. But the sting of loss is still there. Especially after losing Trevor so recently. It hurts to lose her.
We tried to put our grief aside for the evening so that we could enjoy each other's company over dinner. We really needed some time alone after such an emotional week. So we went to Rosa's Cafe. On the way there, our left rear tire hit either a pothole or an object in the road, and when we arrived we discovered that we had a completely flat tire. No rim damage, praise God.
So we went in and tried to enjoy our Valentine's Dinner together. We had good conversation and the Lord helped us to talk about something besides the tire.
After dinner, Kevin went outside to fix the flat. He came back in exasperated. There was one of those stupid theft-protection bolts on the wheel, and the tool to remove it wasn't in our flat kit. We called AAA and waited around for 20 minutes. They arrived promptly, and Kevin went outside while I waited in Rosa's. You know you're in trouble when you see 3 guys staring at a wheel and talking, not making a move to fix it. ("Yep...it's flat.") They didn't have the tool - they said VW has about 500 different versions of this bolt - and said it'd be an hour and a half before we could get a tow truck. They had a tow truck, but we needed the kind you actually drive your car up on to. So we figured we'd just leave the car there and go home. They drove Kevin home to get his car, he came and picked me up, and then we went home.
We finished off our evening by watching a movie. It was tough to go to sleep. The day had been so out of the ordinary. We awoke to find our apartment complex washed in snow. Maybe 3 inches' worth. It was so beautiful. And then we helped our friends move - between the snowballs, the snowman they messed with (let's just say it involved a strategically-placed banana), and the yummy Krispy Kreme for breakfast and Chinese buffet for lunch (thanks, Matt & Erin!!), it was a fun day.
But then the day ended kind of sour, and our emotions were simply raw and touchy. We were still able to laugh together at times, but when we laid down to sleep the stress of the day really hit us. Kevin is staying strong. We'd appreciate your continued prayers as we wrestle through another surreal week. Let me finish this with a praise. If I hadn't had to ride with Kevin this morning, I wouldn't have noticed the big gash in his front right tire. A highway blowout waiting to happen. So we'll get that fixed, too. So God is working in our lives, and we're so blessed to have one another, and we still have joy.
