yay, texas

Yesterday was Texas Independence Day. On March 2, 1836 our state became its own country, and remained so for about 10 years. Then it was the only state to be grafted into the US through treaty rather than annexation.

Every once in a while I read stories about those nutso people who want Texas to secede. Wouldn't that be a cool B-movie? We watched A Day Without a Mexican the other night, a B-movie based on the premise of Californians waking up one day to discover that all the Mexicans have disappeared and their contact with the rest of the world is severed by a strange, pink fog surrounding the state. And life becomes chaos without their Mexican friends contributing to society.

So what if we woke up one day and Texas was its own country? Could we defend ourselves? How self-sufficient could we be? Would you want to stay or move to the US? It's an interesting thought, one that might make a cool, cheesy TV miniseries some day.
