Dead Poets

We watched Dead Poets Society last night. I've lost track of how many times I've seen this film. A few years ago, either Kevin or Preston mentioned that watching the film for the 20th time on cable kind of contradicts the message of the film. Carpe diem! Yes, I will sieze the day...tomorrow, because today I'm sitting on my couch, eating candy and watching a movie.

The movie always inspires me. But sometimes I come away from it sad, realizing that the idealism of my teen and college years is slipping away.

In the coming year, Kevin will have a new job. Where that will be, we're not sure. But I'm hoping we can afford for me to stay at home. I catch flack once in a while when I make that known. I guess they think I just want to sit at home and watch TV all day. But that's not it at all. I want to learn. I want to experience life. And when I spend 40+ hours a week at a desk, that ain't happening. There are so many books I want to read, historical places I want to visit, classes I might enjoy. Learning and experiencing life should not be a privilege. And when we have kids, how can I give them due attention if I'm working full time? How can I set an example of lifelong passion for learning?

"We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. To quote from Whitman, 'O me! O life!... of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless--of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life? Answer. That you are here - that life exists, and identity; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse.'"
