Life has gotten much better this week. On both Sunday and Monday night, I was free. F-R-E-E. No work, no church stuff, no parties, no trips, no chores, no responsibility.
On Sunday night I didn't know what to do with myself. I couldn't sit still. Should I read? Knit? Watch tv? Clean? It was impossible to shut off my brain. So I did a little cleaning, cooked shrimp tacos, watched Extreme Home Makeover, played video games with Kevin, and just vegged. It was awesome.
On Monday night we rented Supersize Me (see the trailer). I was impressed that the guy made it to the end of his McDiet (30 days of nothing but McDonald's, 3 meals a day), but wish he'd taken it easy on himself. He could have toned it down a bit at the beginning. Have a water instead of a milkshake, you know? But he was trying to emulate the eating habits of most Americans. I think the addictive nature of fast food caused him to keep eating at such a crazy pace toward the end.
Aside from his personal experiment, Supersize Me also covers the topics of school lunch programs, food industry lobbies, the obesity epidemic, and food addiction. I think it's worth watching, whether you're interested in this subject area, or just need a visual incentive to cut back on junk food.
The hardest part about watching this film is that I'm now so appalled by fast food that I can't stand to watch someone else eat it. One of our secretaries was eating a McChicken sandwich, and I had the urge to ask her, "Do you know what's in that thing?" But it's not my business, so I didn't say anything. It may be my conviction now that fast food belongs in the garbage, but I'll bet in a month I'll be back to Taco Bell for a combo burrito. It's such a part of our society, I can't hide from the advertising, and it's just so darn easy to pick up fast food instead of cook dinner. So I'm not advocating that you should cut fast food out of your life (especially Jack in the Box tacos...mmm). But I do think this movie could enlighten you on how the food gets from the farm to your plate, so I recommend it.
