Day Three
Every vacation has one of those days. The kind of day where you're always 5 minutes too late to see something spectacular, you can't find a place to eat, and tensions are high.
We survived a day like that. It wasn't a huge deal. Just a day that was only about 30 percent fun.
We woke up and drove to Colorado Springs. Our agenda was to eat breakfast, see the Olympic Training Center, and go to Garden of the Gods. The breakfast place we went to was "closed." In actuality, they stop serving breakfast at 10:30am, and begin serving lunch at 11. But between those times they won't seat you. We got there at 10:40, and they wouldn't let us sit somewhere for 20 minutes. They did say that we could go to their pastry counter, but somehow they didn't understand that we wanted lunch and didn't care if we had to wait 20 minutes. So we left and didn't return.
We ended up driving to P.F. Chang's north of town (we'd seen it on the way in). We ordered, and they brought us the wrong dishes. They said, no problem, it's on the house, and then brought the correct dishes. So we looked like complete pigs - 4 plates on the table, and all of the dishes were fried. Great meal, though, and it cheered us up considerably.
Then we went to the Olympic Training Center. They were having an event for the public that day, but we missed it by about 10 minutes. And because of the event they weren't giving tours. So we walked around for a bit then left.
Next was Garden of the Gods. Well worth the trip! So utterly gorgeous. Purplish storm clouds were rolling in and played a nice contrast against the pink rocks. We hiked among the geological titans in a misty rain. Peaceful.
After we left Garden of the Gods, we drove around Manitou Springs for a bit, and then figured that we'd head back to Denver for dinner. Soup sounded good, after the heavy food we'd had for lunch. We remembered that there was a soup place nearby the hotel. It was closed. So we drove around for a while and couldn't decide on anything, then went back to our room. After a brief nap, we got back in the car and, after about 45 minutes, settled on Taco Bell. Sigh.
I don't intend for it to sound like the day was a total loss. We really did enjoy each other's company. We didn't take out our frustrations on each other. Instead, we covered the day with laughter and just pressed on. The day is only as bad as you make it.
